Does Huhtamäki Oyj (HEL:HUH1V) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?

Simply Wall St

Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. As with many other companies Huhtamäki Oyj (HEL:HUH1V) makes use of debt. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?

What Risk Does Debt Bring?

Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.

What Is Huhtamäki Oyj's Debt?

As you can see below, Huhtamäki Oyj had €1.57b of debt at September 2025, down from €1.65b a year prior. However, it does have €327.7m in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about €1.24b.

How Strong Is Huhtamäki Oyj's Balance Sheet?

Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Huhtamäki Oyj had liabilities of €1.10b due within 12 months and liabilities of €1.64b due beyond that. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of €327.7m as well as receivables valued at €732.7m due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling €1.68b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.

While this might seem like a lot, it is not so bad since Huhtamäki Oyj has a market capitalization of €3.12b, and so it could probably strengthen its balance sheet by raising capital if it needed to. But we definitely want to keep our eyes open to indications that its debt is bringing too much risk.

We measure a company's debt load relative to its earnings power by looking at its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and by calculating how easily its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) cover its interest expense (interest cover). Thus we consider debt relative to earnings both with and without depreciation and amortization expenses.

Huhtamäki Oyj's debt is 2.5 times its EBITDA, and its EBIT cover its interest expense 6.0 times over. This suggests that while the debt levels are significant, we'd stop short of calling them problematic. The bad news is that Huhtamäki Oyj saw its EBIT decline by 20% over the last year. If that sort of decline is not arrested, then the managing its debt will be harder than selling broccoli flavoured ice-cream for a premium. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Huhtamäki Oyj's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.

Finally, a company can only pay off debt with cold hard cash, not accounting profits. So we always check how much of that EBIT is translated into free cash flow. During the last three years, Huhtamäki Oyj produced sturdy free cash flow equating to 68% of its EBIT, about what we'd expect. This free cash flow puts the company in a good position to pay down debt, when appropriate.

Our View

Huhtamäki Oyj's struggle to grow its EBIT had us second guessing its balance sheet strength, but the other data-points we considered were relatively redeeming. For example its conversion of EBIT to free cash flow was refreshing. When we consider all the factors discussed, it seems to us that Huhtamäki Oyj is taking some risks with its use of debt. While that debt can boost returns, we think the company has enough leverage now. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. For example - Huhtamäki Oyj has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
