For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like KONE Oyj (HEL:KNEBV), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is KONE Oyj Growing?

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. We can see that in the last three years KONE Oyj grew its EPS by 6.3% per year. That might not be particularly high growth, but it does show that per-share earnings are moving steadily in the right direction.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). KONE Oyj maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 3.7% to €10b. That's progress.

Are KONE Oyj Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a €30b company like KONE Oyj. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth €1.1b. This suggests to me that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!

Does KONE Oyj Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

One important encouraging feature of KONE Oyj is that it is growing profits. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. The combination sparks joy for me, so I'd consider keeping the company on a watchlist. Before you take the next step you should know about the 1 warning sign for KONE Oyj that we have uncovered.

Although KONE Oyj certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
