Stock Analysis

China Aerospace Times Electronics (SHSE:600879) investors are up 3.6% in the past week, but earnings have declined over the last year

If you want to compound wealth in the stock market, you can do so by buying an index fund. But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. For example, the China Aerospace Times Electronics CO., LTD. (SHSE:600879) share price is up 36% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 20% (not including dividends). If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! The longer term returns have not been as good, with the stock price only 24% higher than it was three years ago.

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Over the last twelve months, China Aerospace Times Electronics actually shrank its EPS by 21%.

So we don't think that investors are paying too much attention to EPS. Therefore, it seems likely that investors are putting more weight on metrics other than EPS, at the moment.

We doubt the modest 0.5% dividend yield is doing much to support the share price. China Aerospace Times Electronics' revenue actually dropped 17% over last year. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.
