The past year for Straumann Holding (VTX:STMN) investors has not been profitable
It's easy to match the overall market return by buying an index fund. When you buy individual stocks, you can make higher profits, but you also face the risk of under-performance. That downside risk was realized by Straumann Holding AG (VTX:STMN) shareholders over the last year, as the share price declined 22%. That's well below the market return of 13%. However, the longer term returns haven't been so bad, with the stock down 16% in the last three years.
Now let's have a look at the company's fundamentals, and see if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Unhappily, Straumann Holding had to report a 13% decline in EPS over the last year. The share price decline of 22% is actually more than the EPS drop. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, a year ago.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

A Different Perspective
Straumann Holding shareholders are down 21% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 13%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 1.4% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. Is Straumann Holding cheap compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.
