There's Been No Shortage Of Growth Recently For Alcon's (VTX:ALC) Returns On Capital
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So when we looked at Alcon (VTX:ALC) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Alcon:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.044 = US$1.2b ÷ (US$30b - US$2.5b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
Thus, Alcon has an ROCE of 4.4%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Medical Equipment industry average of 14%.

How Are Returns Trending?
While there are companies with higher returns on capital out there, we still find the trend at Alcon promising. More specifically, while the company has kept capital employed relatively flat over the last five years, the ROCE has climbed 15,730% in that same time. Basically the business is generating higher returns from the same amount of capital and that is proof that there are improvements in the company's efficiencies. It's worth looking deeper into this though because while it's great that the business is more efficient, it might also mean that going forward the areas to invest internally for the organic growth are lacking.
The Bottom Line
In summary, we're delighted to see that Alcon has been able to increase efficiencies and earn higher rates of return on the same amount of capital. Considering the stock has delivered 38% to its stockholders over the last five years, it may be fair to think that investors aren't fully aware of the promising trends yet. Given that, we'd look further into this stock in case it has more traits that could make it multiply in the long term.
On the other side of ROCE, we have to consider valuation. That's why we have a FREE intrinsic value estimation for ALC on our platform that is definitely worth checking out.
