The analysts covering Americas Gold and Silver Corporation (TSE:USA) delivered a dose of negativity to shareholders today, by making a substantial revision to their statutory forecasts for this year. There was a fairly draconian cut to their revenue estimates, perhaps an implicit admission that previous forecasts were much too optimistic.

After the downgrade, the six analysts covering Americas Gold and Silver are now predicting revenues of US$58m in 2021. If met, this would reflect a huge 87% improvement in sales compared to the last 12 months. Losses are presumed to reduce, shrinking 16% from last year to US$0.84. However, before this estimates update, the consensus had been expecting revenues of US$87m and US$0.69 per share in losses. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, with the analysts making a serious cut to their revenue forecasts while also expecting losses per share to increase.

The consensus price target fell 29% to CA$1.90, with the analysts clearly concerned about the company following the weaker revenue and earnings outlook. The consensus price target is just an average of individual analyst targets, so - it could be handy to see how wide the range of underlying estimates is. There are some variant perceptions on Americas Gold and Silver, with the most bullish analyst valuing it at CA$3.00 and the most bearish at CA$1.15 per share. Note the wide gap in analyst price targets? This implies to us that there is a fairly broad range of possible scenarios for the underlying business.

Looking at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can make sense of these forecasts is to see how they measure up against both past performance and industry growth estimates. One thing stands out from these estimates, which is that Americas Gold and Silver is forecast to grow faster in the future than it has in the past, with revenues expected to display 251% annualised growth until the end of 2021. If achieved, this would be a much better result than the 7.8% annual decline over the past five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 3.4% per year. So it looks like Americas Gold and Silver is expected to grow faster than its competitors, at least for a while.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that analysts increased their loss per share estimates for this year. While analysts did downgrade their revenue estimates, these forecasts still imply revenues will perform better than the wider market. Furthermore, there was a cut to the price target, suggesting that the latest news has led to more pessimism about the intrinsic value of the business. Given the stark change in sentiment, we'd understand if investors became more cautious on Americas Gold and Silver after today.
