Optimistic Investors Push SECURE Waste Infrastructure Corp. (TSE:SES) Shares Up 27% But Growth Is Lacking
SECURE Waste Infrastructure Corp. (TSE:SES) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 27% gain in the last month alone. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 59%.
Following the firm bounce in price, SECURE Waste Infrastructure's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 23.3x might make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in Canada, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 16x and even P/E's below 10x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.
SECURE Waste Infrastructure could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is SECURE Waste Infrastructure's Growth Trending?
SECURE Waste Infrastructure's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 57%. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 11% each year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be similar to the 11% each year growth forecast for the broader market.
With this information, we find it interesting that SECURE Waste Infrastructure is trading at a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly average growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.
The Final Word
SECURE Waste Infrastructure shares have received a push in the right direction, but its P/E is elevated too. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that SECURE Waste Infrastructure currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is only in line with the wider market. Right now we are uncomfortable with the relatively high share price as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
