Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like North American Construction Group (TSE:NOA), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is North American Construction Group Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In the last three years North American Construction Group's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. North American Construction Group boosted its trailing twelve month EPS from CA$1.45 to CA$1.75, in the last year. That's a 20% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). North American Construction Group's EBIT margins have actually improved by 5.8 percentage points in the last year, to reach 14%, but, on the flip side, revenue was down 30%. That's not ideal.
