There's Been No Shortage Of Growth Recently For MDA Space's (TSE:MDA) Returns On Capital
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So when we looked at MDA Space (TSE:MDA) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for MDA Space, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.052 = CA$91m ÷ (CA$2.6b - CA$825m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
Therefore, MDA Space has an ROCE of 5.2%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Aerospace & Defense industry average of 9.6%.

How Are Returns Trending?
We're delighted to see that MDA Space is reaping rewards from its investments and is now generating some pre-tax profits. About three years ago the company was generating losses but things have turned around because it's now earning 5.2% on its capital. And unsurprisingly, like most companies trying to break into the black, MDA Space is utilizing 36% more capital than it was three years ago. We like this trend, because it tells us the company has profitable reinvestment opportunities available to it, and if it continues going forward that can lead to a multi-bagger performance.
For the record though, there was a noticeable increase in the company's current liabilities over the period, so we would attribute some of the ROCE growth to that. Essentially the business now has suppliers or short-term creditors funding about 32% of its operations, which isn't ideal. Keep an eye out for future increases because when the ratio of current liabilities to total assets gets particularly high, this can introduce some new risks for the business.
The Key Takeaway
Overall, MDA Space gets a big tick from us thanks in most part to the fact that it is now profitable and is reinvesting in its business. And a remarkable 213% total return over the last three years tells us that investors are expecting more good things to come in the future. Therefore, we think it would be worth your time to check if these trends are going to continue.
