Investors Aren't Buying Allied Tecnologia S.A.'s (BVMF:ALLD3) Earnings
Allied Tecnologia S.A.'s (BVMF:ALLD3) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 6.8x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Brazil, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 9x and even P/E's above 14x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
For example, consider that Allied Tecnologia's financial performance has been poor lately as its earnings have been in decline. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Allied Tecnologia's Growth Trending?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, Allied Tecnologia would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 29% decrease to the company's bottom line. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 59% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the market is expected to grow by 14% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term earnings decline into perspective.
In light of this, it's understandable that Allied Tecnologia's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. However, we think shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.
The Bottom Line On Allied Tecnologia's P/E
We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Allied Tecnologia revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term are contributing to its low P/E, given the market is set to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Allied Tecnologia (of which 1 can't be ignored!) you should know about.
