Do Its Financials Have Any Role To Play In Driving Odontoprev S.A.'s (BVMF:ODPV3) Stock Up Recently?
Most readers would already be aware that Odontoprev's (BVMF:ODPV3) stock increased significantly by 5.4% over the past week. We wonder if and what role the company's financials play in that price change as a company's long-term fundamentals usually dictate market outcomes. Particularly, we will be paying attention to Odontoprev's ROE today.
Return on equity or ROE is a key measure used to assess how efficiently a company's management is utilizing the company's capital. In simpler terms, it measures the profitability of a company in relation to shareholder's equity.
How Is ROE Calculated?
ROE can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Odontoprev is:
41% = R$562m ÷ R$1.4b (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).
The 'return' is the profit over the last twelve months. So, this means that for every R$1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of R$0.41.

What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth?
So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes.
Odontoprev's Earnings Growth And 41% ROE
Firstly, we acknowledge that Odontoprev has a significantly high ROE. Additionally, the company's ROE is higher compared to the industry average of 11% which is quite remarkable. Probably as a result of this, Odontoprev was able to see a decent net income growth of 12% over the last five years.
As a next step, we compared Odontoprev's net income growth with the industry and were disappointed to see that the company's growth is lower than the industry average growth of 17% in the same period.
The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. Has the market priced in the future outlook for ODPV3? Is Odontoprev Efficiently Re-investing Its Profits?
While Odontoprev has a three-year median payout ratio of 67% (which means it retains 33% of profits), the company has still seen a fair bit of earnings growth in the past, meaning that its high payout ratio hasn't hampered its ability to grow.
Besides, Odontoprev has been paying dividends for at least ten years or more. This shows that the company is committed to sharing profits with its shareholders. Upon studying the latest analysts' consensus data, we found that the company's future payout ratio is expected to rise to 90% over the next three years. However, the company's ROE is not expected to change by much despite the higher expected payout ratio.

Summary
On the whole, we do feel that Odontoprev has some positive attributes. Its earnings have grown respectably as we saw earlier, which was likely due to the company reinvesting its earnings at a pretty high rate of return. However, given the high ROE, we do think that the company is reinvesting a small portion of its profits. This could likely be preventing the company from growing to its full extent. That being so, a study of the latest analyst forecasts show that the company is expected to see a slowdown in its future earnings growth.
