If You Like EPS Growth Then Check Out Resilux (EBR:RES) Before It's Too Late

It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Resilux (EBR:RES). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Fast Is Resilux Growing?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. We can see that in the last three years Resilux grew its EPS by 7.3% per year. While that sort of growth rate isn't amazing, it does show the business is growing.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). While Resilux may have maintained EBIT margins over the last year, revenue has fallen. Suffice it to say that is not a great sign of growth.

While it's always good to see growing profits, you should always remember that a weak balance sheet could come back to bite. So check Resilux's balance sheet strength, before getting too excited.

Are Resilux Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that Resilux insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Indeed, they hold €17m worth of its stock. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. That amounts to 5.7% of the company, demonstrating a degree of high-level alignment with shareholders.

Is Resilux Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One important encouraging feature of Resilux is that it is growing profits. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. What about risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Resilux you should know about.
