DEME Group NV's (EBR:DEME) Share Price Boosted 26% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
Despite an already strong run, DEME Group NV (EBR:DEME) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 26% in the last thirty days. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 38%.
Although its price has surged higher, DEME Group may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 13.9x, since almost half of all companies in Belgium have P/E ratios greater than 16x and even P/E's higher than 27x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Recent times have been advantageous for DEME Group as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is DEME Group's Growth Trending?
DEME Group's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 19%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 62% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 4.0% per annum as estimated by the six analysts watching the company. With the market predicted to deliver 12% growth per year, the company is positioned for a weaker earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that DEME Group's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
What We Can Learn From DEME Group's P/E?
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift DEME Group's P/E close to the market median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
As we suspected, our examination of DEME Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
The company's balance sheet is another key area for risk analysis. Our free balance sheet analysis for DEME Group with six simple checks will allow you to discover any risks that could be an issue.
