Here's Why We're Watching icetana's (ASX:ICE) Cash Burn Situation
Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. By way of example, icetana (ASX:ICE) has seen its share price rise 336% over the last year, delighting many shareholders. Having said that, unprofitable companies are risky because they could potentially burn through all their cash and become distressed.
Given its strong share price performance, we think it's worthwhile for icetana shareholders to consider whether its cash burn is concerning. For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.
Does icetana Have A Long Cash Runway?
A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. When icetana last reported its June 2025 balance sheet in August 2025, it had zero debt and cash worth AU$3.9m. In the last year, its cash burn was AU$2.5m. Therefore, from June 2025 it had roughly 19 months of cash runway. While that cash runway isn't too concerning, sensible holders would be peering into the distance, and considering what happens if the company runs out of cash. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.

How Well Is icetana Growing?
icetana actually ramped up its cash burn by a whopping 56% in the last year, which shows it is boosting investment in the business. While that's concerning on it's own, the fact that operating revenue was actually down 49% over the same period makes us positively tremulous. Considering these two factors together makes us nervous about the direction the company seems to be heading. Of course, we've only taken a quick look at the stock's growth metrics, here. This graph of historic earnings and revenue shows how icetana is building its business over time.
Can icetana Raise More Cash Easily?
Since icetana can't yet boast improving growth metrics, the market will likely be considering how it can raise more cash if need be. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
icetana has a market capitalisation of AU$32m and burnt through AU$2.5m last year, which is 7.6% of the company's market value. That's a low proportion, so we figure the company would be able to raise more cash to fund growth, with a little dilution, or even to simply borrow some money.
Is icetana's Cash Burn A Worry?
Even though its falling revenue makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought icetana's cash burn relative to its market cap was relatively promising. We don't think its cash burn is particularly problematic, but after considering the range of factors in this article, we do think shareholders should be monitoring how it changes over time. On another note, we conducted an in-depth investigation of the company, and identified 3 warning signs for icetana (1 is a bit unpleasant!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
