We think all investors should try to buy and hold high quality multi-year winners. While the best companies are hard to find, but they can generate massive returns over long periods. Just think about the savvy investors who held Probiotec Limited (ASX:PBP) shares for the last five years, while they gained 467%. This just goes to show the value creation that some businesses can achieve. It's also good to see the share price up 39% over the last quarter.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Over half a decade, Probiotec managed to grow its earnings per share at 123% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 41% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has become relatively pessimistic about the company.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Probiotec, it has a TSR of 573% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Probiotec has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 23% in the last twelve months. Of course, that includes the dividend. However, that falls short of the 46% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. The pessimistic view would be that be that the stock has its best days behind it, but on the other hand the price might simply be moderating while the business itself continues to execute. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
