Long term investing is the way to go, but that doesn't mean you should hold every stock forever. It hits us in the gut when we see fellow investors suffer a loss. Spare a thought for those who held Kapsch TrafficCom AG (VIE:KTCG) for five whole years - as the share price tanked 76%. And it's not just long term holders hurting, because the stock is down 26% in the last year. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 13% in the last three months. But this could be related to the weak market, which is down 7.8% in the same period.

After losing 10% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

Before we look at the performance, you might like to know that our analysis indicates that KTCG is potentially undervalued!

Because Kapsch TrafficCom made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last five years Kapsch TrafficCom saw its revenue shrink by 7.2% per year. While far from catastrophic that is not good. If a business loses money, you want it to grow, so no surprises that the share price has dropped 12% each year in that time. We're generally averse to companies with declining revenues, but we're not alone in that. That is not really what the successful investors we know aim for.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

Investors should note that there's a difference between Kapsch TrafficCom's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for Kapsch TrafficCom shareholders, and that cash payout explains why its total shareholder loss of 74%, over the last 5 years, isn't as bad as the share price return.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 17% in the twelve months, Kapsch TrafficCom shareholders did even worse, losing 26%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 12% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. Shareholders might want to examine this detailed historical graph of past earnings, revenue and cash flow.
