In August 2019, Tapestry, Inc. (NYSE:TPR) released its latest earnings announcement, which showed that the business experienced a strong tailwind, leading to a high double-digit earnings growth of 62%. Investors may find it useful to understand how market analysts perceive Tapestry’s earnings growth outlook over the next couple of years and whether the future looks even brighter than the past. I will be looking at earnings excluding extraordinary items to exclude one-off activities to get a better understanding of the underlying drivers of earnings.
Analysts’ expectations for the upcoming year seems positive, with earnings expanding by a robust 14%. This growth seems to continue into the following year with rates arriving at double digit 19% compared to today’s earnings, and finally hitting US$796m by 2022.
Although it is informative understanding the rate of growth year by year relative to today’s value, it may be more valuable gauging the rate at which the business is moving every year, on average. The benefit of this approach is that we can get a bigger picture of the direction of Tapestry’s earnings trajectory over the long run, irrespective of near term fluctuations, which may be more relevant for long term investors. To calculate this rate, I put a line of best fit through the forecasted earnings by market analysts. The slope of this line is the rate of earnings growth, which in this case is 7.1%. This means, we can presume Tapestry will grow its earnings by 7.1% every year for the next couple of years.
