UQM Technologies Inc’s (NYSEMKT:UQM): UQM Technologies, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, develops, manufactures, and sells electric motors, generators, power electronic controllers, and fuel cell compressors in the United states and internationally. With the latest financial year loss of -US$5m and a trailing-twelve month of -US$6m, the US$72m market-cap amplifies its loss by moving further away from its breakeven target. The most pressing concern for investors is UQM’s path to profitability – when will it breakeven? According to the industry analysts covering UQM, breakeven is near. They expect the company to post a final loss in 2018, before turning a profit of US$5m in 2019. Therefore, UQM is expected to breakeven roughly a couple of months from now! How fast will UQM have to grow each year in order to reach the breakeven point by 2019? Working backwards from analyst estimates, it turns out that they expect the company to grow 63% year-on-year, on average, which is extremely buoyant. Should the business grow at a slower rate, it will become profitable at a later date than expected.

I’m not going to go through company-specific developments for UQM given that this is a high-level summary, but, bear in mind that by and large a high forecast growth rate is not unusual for a company that is currently undergoing an investment period.

Before I wrap up, there’s one issue worth mentioning. UQM currently has a relatively high level of debt. Typically, debt shouldn’t exceed 40% of your equity, which in UQM’s case is 54%. Note that a higher debt obligation increases the risk around investing in the loss-making company.
