I Built A List Of Growing Companies And Monster Beverage (NASDAQ:MNST) Made The Cut

It’s only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in ‘sexy’ stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, ‘Long shots almost never pay off.’

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Monster Beverage (NASDAQ:MNST). Now, I’m not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can’t shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Quickly Is Monster Beverage Increasing Earnings Per Share?

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). It’s no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. We can see that in the last three years Monster Beverage grew its EPS by 17% per year. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Monster Beverage maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 7.9% to US$4.3b. That’s a real positive.

Are Monster Beverage Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since Monster Beverage has a market capitalization of US$43b, we wouldn’t expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth US$966m. This suggests to me that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders’ interests when making decisions!

Is Monster Beverage Worth Keeping An Eye On?

As I already mentioned, Monster Beverage is a growing business, which is what I like to see. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. The combination sparks joy for me, so I’d consider keeping the company on a watchlist. You still need to take note of risks, for example – Monster Beverage has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
