Did You Manage To Avoid PRGX Global’s (NASDAQ:PRGX) 38% Share Price Drop?

Investors can approximate the average market return by buying an index fund. When you buy individual stocks, you can make higher profits, but you also face the risk of under-performance. For example, the PRGX Global, Inc. (NASDAQ:PRGX) share price is down 38% in the last year. That’s disappointing when you consider the market returned 3.3%. The silver lining (for longer term investors) is that the stock is still 19% higher than it was three years ago. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 27% in the last three months. We note that the company has reported results fairly recently; and the market is hardly delighted. While PRGX Global made a small profit, in the last year, we think that the market is probably more focussed on the top line growth at the moment. As a general rule, we think this kind of company is more comparable to loss-making stocks, since the actual profit is so low. It would be hard to believe in a more profitable future without growing revenues.

In the last twelve months, PRGX Global increased its revenue by 3.2%. That’s not a very high growth rate considering it doesn’t make profits. Given this fairly low revenue growth (and lack of profits), it’s not particularly surprising to see the stock down 38% in a year. It’s important not to lose sight of the fact that profitless companies must grow. So remember, if you buy a profitless company then you risk being a profitless investor.

It’s probably worth noting we’ve seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. This free report showing analyst forecasts should help you form a view on PRGX Global

A Different Perspective

PRGX Global shareholders are down 38% for the year, but the market itself is up 3.3%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year’s performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 2.6% over the last half decade. We realise that Buffett has said investors should ‘buy when there is blood on the streets’, but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality businesses.
