Coinbase and the anniversary of the Bybit hack: Lessons for Investors

The Bybit explosion in February 2025 was one of the largest cybersecurity events in the history of digital assets. A sophisticated social engineering attack on a third party wallet provider allowed attackers to authorise illegitimate transfers and drain over 400 000 Ethereum worth over $1.4 billion USD, sending shockwaves through the market and highlighting persistent security vulnerabilities in crypto infrastructure (Kuhn, 2025; Carter, 2025). The incident exposed how fragile the crypto ecosystem can be when people and policy fail alongside technology and showed the danger of approving transactions without strong real-time anomaly detection (O’Neill and Guadagnuolo, 2025).

Coinbase Global was not hacked in the Bybit incident, but markets treated it as a sentiment shock across all publicly listed crypto exchanges, reinforcing that cybersecurity failures at one player can cause investors to reprice risk across the sector (Chen et al., 2023). Research shows that markets react negatively to material breach disclosures especially when they affect trust and core operations (Yu Lun Chen, Chang and Yang, 2023), and Coinbase’s own data breach in May 2025 involved bribed support agents that led to stolen personal information and an extortion attempt, which the company publicly disclosed and refused to pay (Coinbase, 2025a; CoinDesk, 2025). The exchange committed to reimburse impacted users and pursue legal action against the perpetrators, reflecting ethical professional practice (Coinbase, 2025b).

In the short term Coinbase faced pressure on trading volumes and share price as crypto markets weakened amid broader industry stress, making some quarters challenging for performance. In early 2026, the company reported weaker recent earnings results compared to past periods (FX Leaders, 2026), and simultaneously authorised a significant share buyback to signal confidence in capital allocation. Investors responded positively with a rebound in COIN stock in mid-February 2026, showing that operational risks can depress multiples while disciplined continuity planning and capital management can support valuation (Business Times, 2026).

From a risk-adjusted perspective, the Bybit explosion and Coinbase’s own incident response demonstrate that cybersecurity and contingency planning are material inputs into how markets value a company. Equity analysis must therefore consider not just trading volumes and revenue but also governance clarity, disclosure timeliness and the rigour of third party risk management. These factors shape economic sustainability and long-term investor trust in the crypto sector.
